Where to find celebrations this weekend in and around Chicago – NBC Chicago

Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when the Emancipation Proclamation was brought to enslaved people in Texas – more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued it.

In June 2021, Juneteenth was declared an official holiday after President Joe Biden signed it.

Here are some of the celebrations taking place in and around Chicago to honor the day:


1619: A People’s Journey, the Musical at the Vittum Theater in Chicago
A Juneteenth event packed with musical performances from genres like hip-hop, blues and jazz. From 1 pm to 3 pm and from 6 pm to 8 pm on Friday and from 4 pm to 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday. 1012 N. Noble St.

Feast of 1865
A three-day cultural festival. A celebration of activities focused on families, history, education, entertainment and the community. 11 am to 8 pm at Music Court Circle in Garfield Park.

June 18

Juneteenth Weekend Market Day at POSE CULTURAL ART GALLERY
Celebrate Juneteenth with a market day filled with black arts and crafts. 1 pm to 4 pm, 2136 W. Chicago Ave.

Juneteenth Village Fest at Anna & Frederick Douglass Park
Juneteenth with a family event with games, carnival rides, a zoo, rock climbing and food. 12pm to 6pm, 1313 S. Sacramento Drive.

Trade Day & Juneteenth Celebration at Douglas Park in Chicago
A celebration featuring STEM stations, fitness and art stations, performances, and a hands-on experience with college commerce students will be held from noon to 3:00 pm at Douglas Park Field House, 1401 S. Sacramento Drive.

Opals Walk for Freedom Juneteenth Parade
Juneteenth is bringing people together to celebrate the national holiday by taking a walk with Ms. Opal at the Robert Crown Community Center, 1801 Main Street, 10 am to 1:30 pm.

June 19

Juneteenth Extravaganza at Ellis
Music, vendors and activities are all part of this family-friendly celebration of Juneteenth. 11 am to 7 pm at 1000 E. 76th St.

Juneteenth in Joliet
Celebrate Juneteenth’s history and culture with music and snacks. From noon to 4 pm on June 19 at the Joliet Area Historical Museum.

June 1st market
A Chicago pop-up market featuring black businesses will include a variety of businesses and stores ranging from beauty to fashion. It will be at 2pm at Hyde Park’s Promontory.

Afro Jazz Concert from the Domingo de Ramos Music Series
Musical performances by black artists on Juneteenth from 2pm to 5pm at 436 E. 47th St.

Lawndale Juneteenth/Father’s Day Celebration
A barbecue meal, a car show and music to celebrate Father’s Day and Valentine’s Day. 4pm to 9pm at 3200 W. Douglas Blvd.

Juneteenth Celebration at Wrigley Field

A number of companies will set up shop on Gallagher Way to sell their products and offer their services as part of the Juneteenth Celebration at Wrigley Field – A Black Entrepreneurs Experience. The event coincides with the Chicago Cubs’ game on Sunday’s friendly against the Atlanta Braves at 1:20 pm.
