If that whets your appetite, then the Northern Ireland Prison Service (NIPS) wants to hear from you. We are currently recruiting permanent Night Guard Officers (NCOs) to work in all three of our prisons:

  • Maghaberry Prison – near Moira
  • Magilligan Prison – near Limavady
  • Hydebank Wood College and Women’s Prison – near Belfast

This is a unique opportunity to do your part to make Northern Ireland a safer place; supporting the people in our care and keeping them safe and secure at night.

Successful candidates will undergo extensive training and receive support and guidance as they begin working with prisoners and have the opportunity to develop new skills.

What will I get?

£24,211 – £27,359 per year (under review).

The position also attracts a supplemental risk allowance which is currently £3,492 per year (under review) and a start-up allowance of £92.80 per year. Starting salary will be at scale minimum. Salary progression will be in accordance with the current NIPS pay policy.

What time will I work?

The shift pattern for a sergeant is based on an average 44-hour week. This means a pattern of working seven days on shift, followed by seven days off.

Actual hours worked per week vary and include weekends and public/privileged holidays.

Where will I work?

NCOs are classified as non-mobile and will be located in Maghaberry, Magilligan or Hydebank Wood.

What does the job involve?

Your primary role is to keep the people in our care safe and secure at night. You will also support all people who need help. You will perform employee counts, lock/unlock as appropriate, and adhere to and implement safer custody policies and procedures.
