Show cancellations hit Cabaret Festival opening weekend

COVID and a flight cancellation disrupted the opening weekend of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, with a big show now off the schedule.

Festival organizers recently announced that all performances by How to Kill Your Husband (and Other Useful Household Tips) was canceled after a positive case of COVID-19.

The grand opening night show, presented by State Opera South Australia, was scheduled to take place from today to Sunday at the Dunstan Playhouse.

It was the State Opera’s first appearance at the Cabaret Festival and the debut of respected Adelaide theater director Nescha Jelk in opera direction.

In a statement, Adelaide Cabaret Festival executive producer Alex Sinclair thanked the audience for their understanding and support.

“We are so disappointed that we cannot proceed with how to kill your husband this weekend due to COVID,” she said.

“Over the next three weekends, we hope customers will enjoy seeing the many fabulous shows and participating in the festivities.”

Tonight’s presentation of Davina and the Tramps was also cancelled, due to the cancellation of a flight from the United States.

However, performances scheduled for 8:15 pm on Saturday and Sunday at The Famous Spiegeltent will continue.

“While we are disappointed that tomorrow night’s show cannot go ahead, we are looking forward to a party start and welcome Davina and the Tramps for the Adelaide Cabaret Festival starting Saturday, where they are sure to wow audiences,” said Sinclair.

“We apologize for any inconvenience and look forward to seeing cabaret fans and new audiences joining in the festivities of our favorite winter festival.”

Cabaret Festival said it would notify all affected ticket holders, with refunds being processed automatically.

This weekend’s opening of the Cabaret Festival heralds 12 days of performances under the artistic direction of iconic Australian singer, songwriter, record producer and actress Tina Arena.

The festival starts tonight and runs until June 25th.
