Three dead and one seriously wounded in Maryland shooting

Three people died and four were injured after a shooting at a factory in Smithsburg, Maryland, officials say.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the death toll after violence erupted at Columbia Machine on Thursday afternoon.

The suspect was shot and wounded during a confrontation with a Maryland state police officer, the sheriff’s office said. The officer was shot in the shoulder but retaliated, hitting the gunman who was hospitalized.

According to the sheriff’s office, the suspect has been identified as a 23-year-old Hispanic male who is also an employee at the facility. The suspect used a semiautomatic weapon, however, the exact caliber, make and model were not disclosed.

“The motive for the shooting is still under investigation and there is no active threat to the community,” the sheriff’s office said.

“On June 9, 2022, at approximately 2:30 pm, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to Columbia Machine Inc., 12912 Bikle Road, Smithsburg, MD, for reports of an active shooter,” the department said.

‘Committed to facing its pain with action’, says senator

Senator Chris Van Hollen said action must be taken to stop the killings after a series of mass shootings that raged across the United States last month.

“I am devastated by the lives taken today in Smithsburg and the pain your loved ones are feeling. Today’s horrific shooting comes as our state and nation has witnessed tragedy after tragedy,” he said in a statement.

“We must act to address the mass shootings and the daily number of gun violence in our communities. I am committed to facing your pain with action,” said Van Hollen.

The shooting suspect, a 23-year-old Hispanic man, used a semiautomatic weapon to kill the victims, officials said Thursday.

The victims were identified as Mark Alan Fry, 50; Charles Edward Minnick, 31; and Joshua Robert Wallace, 30.

The fourth person seriously injured has been identified as 42-year-old Brandon Chase Michael, Washington County Sheriff Doug Mullendore said.
