Johnson says UK ready to clear mines to clear grain

Iondon’s insurance market has put the entire region around the Black Sea on its high risk list, which means rising costs for shipments.

Boris Johnson said the UK was considering all options when asked whether the government could provide sovereign guarantees for transport insurance.

“What the UK possibly has to offer, above all else, is experience when it comes to marine insurance, and a lot of experience moving goods in, say, contested areas of the sea,” he said.

Asked whether Britain was ready to help Ukraine demining the area, the prime minister said: “Yes, I don’t want to go into technical or military details, but you can understand what we have already done in supplying equipment to Ukrainians. to protect themselves, we are certainly talking to them on a technical level to help clear Odesa.”

Any mine-clearing effort would be the biggest attempt since the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s, and any project to clear Ukraine’s mines would take several months.

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said separately on Thursday that urgent action needed to be taken next month, before the next harvest, to maintain supplies.
