Explanation of Liverpool and Chelsea kick-off time change in FA Cup final

Liverpool are gearing up to take on Chelsea in the FA Cup final this weekend – but may have attracted some attention with their rather unusual start time.

The Reds beat Manchester City in the semi-final and reached the final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. Chelsea defeated Crystal Palace in the semi-final to score a final against Liverpool.

It has been confirmed that the match will start at the unusual time of 16:45. This is different from previous years where in the 2021 and 2020 FA Cup Finals the start was at 17:15 and 17:30 respectively.

However, the start time of this year’s final was changed due to the Eurovision Song Contest. Due to BBC scheduling issues, the FA Cup final was brought forward in a surreal twist.

Eurovision will be broadcast from 18:15 to 19:15 on BBC Two with the FA Cup final on BBC One until 19:15, assuming no extra time and penalties. Eurovision then takes over BBC One from 8pm, after a 45-minute break.

If the match ends after 90 minutes, it will be completed shortly after 18:30. However, if extra time and penalties are required, the FA Cup Final will affect Pointless Celebrities coverage, planned between 7:15pm and 8:00pm.

This is the first time Liverpool have reached the FA Cup final since 2012, when the Reds lost to Chelsea. For the London club, this is the third consecutive FA Cup final, but they have lost the last two.
