DUP blocks new Northern Ireland Assembly over post-Brexit negotiation protocol – Channel 4 News

The DUP threatened to shut down the Northern Ireland Assembly in protest of the post-Brexit trade protocol, and today it did.

Members were being registered after last week’s elections gave Sinn Féin the most seats.

In order for the speaker to be sworn in and for the assembly to function, the participation of the DUP would be necessary – but its leader, Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, would not allow that.

Sinn Féin leader Michelle O’Neill accused him of “denying democracy” and Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis called on the parties to unite.
