David Beckham welcomes Manchester United move but expects Cristiano Ronaldo to stay | football news

David Beckham says he would welcome changes to Manchester United before the 2022/23 season, but expects Cristiano Ronaldo to continue to be part of the club’s plans going forward.

Speaking with Sky Sports at the Miami GP, the former United midfielder shared his views on the successor to his famous United number 7, saying fans want the 37-year-old to fulfill his contract, which expires in 2023.

He also spoke about the difficulties this season under caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick, who will be replaced by Ajax manager Erik ten Hag, this summer, explaining how he believes fans will be “grateful” that the current season comes to an end in two weeks.

“I think there are changes to be made and changes that are happening, we’ve seen that,” Beckham said.

“It’s been a tough end to the season. But it’s the end of the season, I’m sure a lot of fans are grateful for it because it’s been tough – full of ups and downs.

“The players did what they can do best, as did the coach. I arrived at the stadium a few months ago and all the seats were full, so the fans still believe, cheer, cheer for the team.

“That’s what United fans do. There aren’t many teams that have gone through what they’ve been through in recent years and still fill the stadium. There will be changes.”

On Ronaldo’s future, he added: “Obviously Cristiano is one of the best players of the last 15 years, with Leo [Messi]. Seeing him stay, hopefully at United, is important for the fans.

“It’s important for him – we all know how much Manchester United means to him. He’s still doing what he does best, scoring goals. That’s what Cristiano does.

“Doing what he’s doing at his age is really amazing, so I hope it continues for another year or two.”

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel believes Erik ten Hag’s appointment is an opportunity for change

Former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel believes the signing of Ten Hag is the perfect opportunity for a general change at Old Trafford after a particularly substandard season that left United sixth in the Premier League.

“It’s not cool to watch,” Schmeichel said. “It’s hard to understand, but also to put a finger on exactly what’s wrong.

“We’ve been fighting since Alex [Ferguson] left the club. We’re spending a lot of money and we’re getting somewhere, but not enough.

“With Erik ten Hag coming in now, it’s an opportunity for change and I think that’s what we want – maybe modernize the club a little bit, restructure the club. That’s what I’m looking forward to doing.”
