Christian Eriksen shows Manchester United how far they’ve fallen with the transfer decision

Manchester United are waiting for Christian Eriksen to decide whether he is interested in signing them on a free transfer, which is a far cry from how things used to be at Old Trafford.

Five players whose careers at Man Utd ten Hag can revive

It says all about how far Manchester United have fallen from their position at the top of English football that Cristian Eriksen is really torn between signing for them or returning to Brentford.

In the past, during Sir Alex Ferguson’s winning years, when United came to call a player, it was an absolute no-brainer – Old Trafford was the overwhelming choice destination for anyone worth their salt. Premier League series winners, Champions League winners and contenders, playing in front of 75,000 fans every week, there was little to regret when United and Ferguson came to you.

But the fact that Eriksen is undecided on whether to stay in London or move to Manchester to be part of the new era under Erik ten Hag sums up United’s spectacular fall.

Given that ten Hag has a tight summer transfer budget of £120m, a move to free agent Eriksen makes sense given the qualities he brings are so desperately needed by United. United lack creativity in midfield, with only Bruno Fernandes, ostensibly a number 10, possessing the cunning to unlock defenses and open up opportunities for Cristiano Ronaldo up front.

So signing Eriksen, with his eye for a pass and ability to create something out of nothing, would undoubtedly strengthen United at a time when they have few viable options on the transfer market. United’s refusal to pay for Frenkie de Jong saw their search for the Barcelona midfielder come to a halt, so signing Eriksen as a free agent would be a smart move. Having lost five first-team players this summer – including four midfielders Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard – United need refueling and Erkisen fits the bill.

The Danish international, who has recovered remarkably from the cardiac arrest he suffered in his country’s Euro 2020 debut last summer, is only 30 years old and still has a lot to offer. It remains to be seen whether Eriksen could play in the same formation as Fernandes, although with ten Hag known to favor a 4-3-3 formation, the duo could play on either side of a midfielder.

Brentford’s decision to offer Eriksen a short-term contract in the second half of last season undoubtedly paid off as he helped them finish 13th in the Premier League. The Bees have claimed seven wins in the 10 games they started, managing just six in 28 non-starters, while the goal ratio doubled after Eriksen’s arrival in January. He has ranked third in the Premier League by chances created and passes made in the final third since his first outing for Brentford in a 3-1 win at Norwich on 5 March.

What’s more, Eriksen has played the full 90 minutes in three of Denmark’s four recent UEFA Nations League games, putting an end to doubts about any long-term health issues. Off the pitch, Eriksen and his family have settled in London, where he spent seven years at Tottenham, in addition to his stint at Brentford, and he’s not sure whether to transfer them to Manchester.

With the World Cup in November and December, Eriksen must also decide where he will have the most playing time, to ensure he arrives in Qatar fit and capable of producing his best form for Denmark.

The decision is ultimately up to Eriksen. That United could do with a player of his talent in their squad and want him is undeniable. Whether Eriksen feels the same way and completes his career will be better served by joining United remains to be seen.

If he chooses London, it will be another blow to the wounded pride of United’s fallen giants, who have yet to be signed this summer.
