Chelsea’s stars have told manager Thomas Tuchel that they want the club to sign Richarlison to replace Romelu Lukaku.

The 29-year-old Belgian international is expected to return to Inter Milan on a season-long loan after a disappointing campaign under Tuchel last season. He has scored just eight Premier League goals for the Blues since his £97.5m transfer from Inter last August.

Inter agreed to a £7 million loan fee from Chelsea for Lukaku and he took a big pay cut to make the change happen – with his weekly salary dropping from £325,000 to £210,000. The forward was prolific in his last spell at Inter, scoring 64 goals in 95 games.

Chelsea will need to find a replacement for Lukaku and, according to The Sun, the team asked Tuchel to sign Richarlison. The Everton talisman, 25, is widely regarded as one of the best players in the Premier League who doesn’t currently represent a club called the “Big Six”.

Richarlison has scored 53 goals in 152 appearances for the Toffees since joining the club in the summer of 2018. He played a crucial role in keeping Frank Lampard’s team in the Premier League last season, even scoring the 1-0 winning goal in home against Chelsea.

Richarlison is also an established international and is expected to lead Brazil’s bid for the World Cup this summer. He was part of the squad that won the Copa America in 2019 and gold at last summer’s Olympics in Japan. Brazil is among the favorites to win the World Cup.

Chelsea are believed to be considering a number of attacking options amid Lukaku’s impending departure, including Manchester City star Raheem Sterling and Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele. However, it appears Richarlison is the team’s first choice target.

The Brazilian reportedly wants to leave Everton and a move to Stamford Bridge would allow him to play in the Champions League. He has two years left on his existing contract. Richarlison has played for América Mineiro, Fluminense and Watford.

Tuchel is expected to have more of a voice on transfers this summer following the departure of director Marina Granovskaia. Chelsea have officially announced that the transfer guru will leave Stamford Bridge this summer after weeks of speculation.

The news comes less than a month since Todd Boehly’s consortium completed its takeover of the Premier League club. Longtime chairman Bruce Buck will also step down with Boehly becoming interim sporting director as a new hierarchy is established.

“As guardians of Chelsea FC, we have now begun to execute on our vision and long-term plan for the club, creating an exceptional experience for its loyal and passionate fans and continuing to vie for top honors in keeping with Chelsea FC’s decorated history.” said Boehly.

“Working together, side by side, we are firmly committed to winning, on and off the field. For us, that effort has begun…all the best in your future endeavors.”
