AFL 2022: Collingwood’s Jordan De Goey and Coach Craig McRae Can’t Answer Question

Collingwood coach Craig McRae has spoken publicly for the first time about Jordan De Goey and can’t give the assurance fans want to hear.

Collingwood manager Craig McRae has not guaranteed that Jordan De Goey will be at the football club next year.

The Magpies’ mentor on Thursday night spoke publicly for the first time since the De Goey Bali nightclub video scandal broke.

The coach has said he wants De Goey to return to the football club so he can support the 26-year-old, but he made a revealing statement when asked the question many fans are pondering as the scandal continues to roll.

McRae was asked during a scheduled appearance on SEN radio if he believes De Goey will be at the football club next year. His first three words said a lot.

He replied, “I hope so. I really want. I hope he finds a place where he can come back and be the best version of himself.

“I want an environment where all our players are better from entry to exit. To be honest, I don’t know when that is.”

De Goey has taken personal leave from the club as he deals with the fallout from his mid-year trip abroad, which saw him come under fire when images of his conduct towards a female friend surfaced on social media.

The forward received a suspended fine of $25,000 – a punishment considered by many to be woefully inadequate, as he won’t have to pay a dime if he stays out of trouble for the rest of the year.

Collingwood also confirmed on Tuesday that it has stalled contract negotiations with the talented player until the end of the season after the Pies were reported to have withdrawn a $3.2 million offer over the scandal.

Veteran journalist Caroline Wilson said on Monday night that she believes De Goey will leave the club at the end of the season. Reporter Sam McClure also told 3AW that he believes Collingwood is preparing fans for his eventual decision to let De Goey leave the club.

McRae said on Thursday that he would not speak publicly about the status of De Goey’s contract.

He also said he was not involved in the discussion leading up to the club’s decision to hand over the suspended fine.

“We want him back. We want to hug him, support him and educate him,” she said.

“In Jordy’s case, I just want to get him back. I really want. I want to put my arms around him. I spoke to him yesterday. And he’s not in a place where he can go back to the football club right now.

“He needs to go through some things first and get into a space where he can do that, but it’s a safe space for him, our football club. I want him to feel love and support.”

De Goey revealed he was diagnosed last year with ADHD and appeared to link it to the “mistake” he made in Bali – which was added to a long list of previous indiscretions off the field.

Former Carlton and Brisbane star Brendan Fevola had his own off-field controversies during his playing days, and suggested that De Goey needs to learn how quickly things can be taken away from him.

“I was in a similar situation when I played football, I didn’t really have people around me,” Fevola told Melbourne’s 101.9. The Fox with Fifi, Feb and Nick.

“I thought I was better than anything else and it cost me my career.

“You are blessed to play football and make money that people would dream of making. Go play football for eight years, don’t go anywhere and if you go somewhere don’t tell anyone.

“You go to Bali, everybody knows you go there, it doesn’t matter if you go in or not. It will come back and it will be bad.

“When I left football, I was not respected, I played well at football, my football career is never talked about with any other striker because of my antics off the field and it’s my fault, I have to deal with it.

“I would love to sit down (with De Goey) and say, ‘Man, you can just leave it like this!’

“I just think he needs to get close to some people to help him, because he’s in the wrong circle.”
